How to Ride the Winds of Change

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Wednesday September 10 2008

Say hello to the midweek point.

Didn’t Margie just knock the cover off the ball with yesterday’s fine offering. I’m looking forward to more of her perspectives.

As I continue to lovingly “poke” you into making this Fall season the very best producing part of the year, I share with you a quote sent along by our friend Brenda Mac: Emerson said: “find your soul and poke it with a stick”.

It is my intention this Fall to help you find that soul of yours and encourage you to do exactly what Emerson suggests. It’s going to be a hoot. Now, on with today’s offering. We go to our friend Keith to bring us a terrific perspective about dealing with that never ending phenomenon “change”.

How to Ride the Winds of Change
by Keith Varnum

We humans can learn a lot from animals. Our frisky wild friends are smart. They are natural Change Riders. That’s why many species have been around this earth for millions of years. They go with the current, instead of against it. In fact, they’ve learned to anticipate life’s changes and prepare for the inevitable with grace and ease.

Why Wait?

Many species of animals exhibit pre-adaptive behavior—a very wise approach to life’s constant undulations. Animals don’t wait until life has them up against a wall forcing a shift. Sensing the new demands of life coming down the pike, animals take the initiative. For example, many mammals developed longer body hair generations before the coming of the last Ice Age. So when the freezing temperatures came, these species were ready to deal with the new cold climate.

Sensing the Future

Precognition, or the intuitive ability to see into the future, is common with most animals. Critters usually know when a disaster is about to occur. Animals will head for high ground above the flood plain of a river hours before the cresting waters head their way. And since the beginning of recorded history, virtually every culture in the world has reported observations of unusual animal behavior prior to earthquakes.

In 373 BC, historians recorded that creatures deserted the Greek city of Helice in droves just days before the town was devastated and fell into the sea. The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus wrote that snakes, weasels, rats, centipedes, worms and beetles headed inland in huge numbers before the disaster. Before a 1783 earthquake in Messina, Italy, the howling of dogs in the street was so loud that the authorities issued orders to kill them.

Animal Intuition Saves the Day

It was the Chinese who were the first to successfully forecast a major earthquake using observation of animal behavior. On February 4, 1975, the Chinese successfully evacuated the city of Haicheng, a city of one million people, only days before a 7.3 magnitude earthquake—based primarily on observations of unusual animal activity. 90% of the city’s structures were destroyed in the quake, but since the entire city’s population had been evacuated before the quake struck, few were injured. An estimated 240,000 lives were saved.

In 1989, Jim Berkland, a geologist in Santa Clara County, California, predicted the Lomo Prieta 7.1 magnitude earthquake by observing the number of advertisements for lost cats in local newspapers. Berkland reported that after a decade of observation, he noticed that cats tend to disappear shortly before earthquake activity.

In his book When the Snakes Awake, Helmut Tributsch lists a large number of recorded instances of extremely unusual animal behavior before an earthquake. These include seabirds flying inland, cattle reluctant to enter their stalls, fish jumping out of the water onto dry land, bees evacuating their hive in a panic, deep sea squid coming up to the ocean surface, and bears and snakes coming out of hibernation prematurely.

Rats Play Lifesaver

Another example of our lifesaving furry friends is the tendency of rats to desert a ship that is doomed to sink. Historically, sailors wouldn’t board ships that the ship’s rats had evacuated. Seaman had learned that a ship without rats meant that there was something fatally wrong with the ship, or that the vessel was destined to encounter disaster of some kind.

The Snow’s A Comin’

And in less dramatic examples we take for granted, every wild animal senses and prepares for seasonal changes. Geese fly south way before the weather gets cooler. Squirrels stock up on nuts in the summer for the inevitable cold of winter.

Heed the Early Warning Signs

Humans could take a page or two from the animal survival guide. Life gives us signs, also, to direct us along life’s rambling road. If we pay attention, these messages can help us to flow better with the present, and thereby, the future. And—have you noticed? —if we don’t get the message, life gives us a lesson. If we don’t get the lesson, life gives us a problem. If we don’t handle the problem, life gives us a crisis. A wise person chooses to get the initial message!

Take Action

In the Lakota Indian language, the word for “to get the message” is the same word as their word for “my life has changed.” In other words, in the Lakota culture, if people don’t take action on life’s signs and make changes in their behavior, they didn’t really “get the message.” For the Lakota, receiving guidance and acting on it are one and the same. Unfortunately, in our modern society, we have the socially acceptable habit of saying we get the message—but then not taking the appropriate action on it. A very counterproductive cultural trait!

Like the animals, smart humans learn to successfully navigate through the myriad of life choices by acting on the precise guidance system that the outer world constantly presents. Not only do native peoples live this way, so did all ancient civilizations—right through the time of the Greeks up to the Middle Ages. Even Shakespeare’s plays are full of references to sensing omens and signs—and the human folly of not honoring their directives. It’s only in the last few hundred years—since the Industrial Revolution and human alienation from the land and nature—that we have lost touch with the art and wisdom of reading and following life’s outer signposts.

A Change Surfer opens the door to more magic, meaning and money in his or her world by heeding the wisdom of life’s signals. Practice makes perfect. As we master the skill of responding to the messages aligning us with our spirit’s unique path, we will prosper—and enjoy the journey!

Make Love Last Longer!

If we embrace change in our love life, we can extend the honeymoon and afterglow indefinitely! Partnerships in which each party encourages the other to explore and grow can deepen as they transform. Relationships that are allowed to naturally evolve can last years, even decades—even lifetimes!

Re-Spirit Your Life

The effectiveness of your own personal style of dealing with change defines the level of success that can be achieved. Create a change-friendly attitude and approach that is exciting and playful. Catch the joy of your own spirit! Develop passion in your heart. People who have a fire in their belly and a zest for life can overcome all of life’s surprises. A Change Rider stretches his or her consciousness to envision what’s possible, not just what is.

If you foster your natural strengths, you can respond successfully to all life’s challenges.

Do Your Fears Serve You -- Or Rule You?

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Tuesday September 9 2008

Welcome to this very fine Tuesday. Now we’re going to get right to it today.

Yesterday’s offering inspired a whole bunch of neat reflections. Good for you all who shared your perspectives. I appreciate you.

Today as promised we have another new contributor who has an outstanding offering for you. I expect you’ll really like what Margie has to share.

Do Your Fears Serve You -- Or Rule You?
By Margie Warrell

Now, more than ever before, we are bombarded daily with a litany of reasons why we should play it safe, avoid risk, fear change, distrust and stick with the status quo. For this very reason, now, more than ever before, we need to be mindful about the potentially oppressive impact of fear and increasingly discerning about which ones we pay heed to.

Firstly let me just clarify what I mean by courage. Courage is neither fearlessness nor absence of self doubt. Rather courage is choosing to take action in the presence of fear (and all those little voices in your head telling you to play safe). When you choose to speak up about a sensitive issue that is upsetting you; when you pick up the phone and extend an invitation to someone you'd like to get to know better; when you walk into your bosses office to discuss promotional opportunities; when you voice an opinion that may ruffle feathers; when you end a relationship that isn't working to create space for one that will; when you pursue a dream which requires trading safety of the known and predictable for the possibility that life might hold something bigger and better in store for you.

Living with courage begins with taking a good honest look at the choices you are making today and challenging the assumptions, stories and excuses that are driving them. Whilst I've written an entire book about courage, and the many different ways we can apply it to enrich our experience of life, here are three simple questions that will help you identify where fear may be undermining your happiness and limiting your success.

1. What do I REALLY want?
If there is an area of your life in which you feel a clear level of dissatisfaction or unhappiness then that's the key place to focus first. What would need to change in those areas of your life to have them be the way you really wanted them to be? Don't get stuck on the external stuff here like, "I want a top job, a big house, a hot car and cute babe/bloke by my side." Rather focus on the feeling that you think these things would give you. I.e., "I want a job that is both challenging and rewarding. I want a relationship with a self-assured and honest person whose conversations are stimulating and company fun. I want to live in a home that is great for having friends over..." Get the drill?

Unless you get clear about what you really want - in your career, your relationships, your life - you will have Buckley's chance of actually getting it. So get clear about it: If you trusted yourself completely and had no fear of failing or looking foolish, what would you do or say or become?

2. Where is fear holding me back?
Fear is not a 'bad' thing. Far from it! Rather it's a question of whether or not your fears are actually serving you (protecting you from REAL threats and enabling you to thrive in work, relationships and life) or if they are holding you back (keeping you stuck, tip toeing through life and achieving so much less than you're capable of).

So what is it that you are afraid might happen if you begin taking action in the direction of your goals and dreams? That you will be humiliated, that you'll go broke, be rejected or 'found out' as inadequate? Whatever your fear, own it. Unless you own your fears, they will own you. The exercises in my book Find Your Courage! are designed to help you identify and rise above everyday fears just like these.

3. What's the cost of my inaction?
Research has identified a psychological phenomenon whereby we human beings tend toward discounting the cost of our choices even when it's obvious they are not benefiting us. The reason why? Reality ain't pretty. The result? We kid ourselves everything's hunky dory when really, it's anything but and all the while life sails along in a direction that's taking us far from the life we'd truly love to live. The very act of acknowledging that we are stuck or unhappy is an act of courage all its own, but getting present to the steep price you are paying for letting fear and doubt run your life (or even part of it!) is absolutely crucial to re-creating it the way you want it to be. Only once you have done so can you find the guts to put your fears in their rightful place can you rise above them and into action toward whatever tugs at your heart.

You were not born to live your life resigned, and passively stagnating, within your safe'n'cozy little comfort zone. You were born to manifest the potential within you by stepping out of it daily - in your actions, aspirations and conversations. If it were easy to do that, if there were no barriers - internal or external -, then everyone would be 'out there', pursuing their dreams, standing their ground and taking the lid off what they are told is possible. But 'everybody' isn't doing that because most folks find their comfort zone a more comfortable place to live. Surprise, surprise! Sadly they end up living a life ruled by fear, riddled with anxiety, brimming with mediocrity and markedly absent of the very stuff that makes life worth living.

Stepping beyond the confines of your comfort zone will call on you to dig deeper into yourself than you have up to now; to dare to accomplish things which have no guarantee of success and to trade the 'fine and good' for an experience of life that is far better, deeper, richer and infinitely more gratifying to your spirit.

The world has more than its fair share of people living lives of immaculate mediocrity. There are things that you and only you can do; things that will never be done if you do not dare to do them. So don't sell out to your fears or, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said "...tip toe through life only to make it safely to death." You are capable of so much more than that. The universe, and all we mere mortals in it, need from you so much more than that.

So take your 'fear bully' by the horns and dare to dream more, do more, say more, live more, give more and be more! Life's too short to be lived any other way.

Notes on the Good Life

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Monday September 8 2008

Welcome to the start of a brand spanking new week with which to play.

So , what’s your plan to make this week something amazing and spectacular? Have you set aside some “you” time to balance off the stellar effort you are putting in to making your goals and intentions manifest? How about your journaling and meditating, are you making sure you fulfill this necessary part of your success formula?

This week we are really going to push your buttons a bit, but with love and compassion though. It’ll be fun and we’ve got some collaboration from a number of our very favorite contributors.

To get the fun started we call on our good friend Philip, and as always he delivers big time.

Also, check out what our friends over at Daily Insight are doing to get their week off on a high note. You'll catch them here: http://dailyinsight.itstrue.ca

Notes on the Good Life
by Philip Humbert

I'm convinced that Thoreau was at least partially right when he noted that "most people live lives of quiet desperation." Personally, I'm amazed at how many people fail to enjoy life as much as they easily could.

For me the key to that sentence is "easily could." The "Good Life" is personal and different for each of us. For some it's great wealth and private jets, while for others it's art and poetry, and few need acres of Montana solitude. For me, a dog takes care of maybe 30% of the problem just by laying at my feet. Your "Good Life" is a very personal thing and it's up to you to figure out what it looks like, and how to achieve it.

Having said that, I'm convinced that most of us could live much richer, more satisfying and more fulfilling lives than we do. Fortunately, it's not difficult.

Sure, achieving many of our "big goals" is hard. Some goals require years of effort, superior organization and an element of luck, but most goals are not nearly so hard. In fact, many of the desires and longings my clients and friends talk about could easily be achieved in a few weeks, or sooner. Many could be achieved before you go to bed tonight. Let's think about this.

If you want more "peace of mind," a basic question is, Do you meditate, pray or journal every day? If you want more time as a family, or more time for yourself, how will you adjust your schedule? Want more money in the bank? What are you doing to make that happen? If you want to be healthier, thinner or have more energy, what time are you going to the gym and what's on the menu for dinner? These are not trick questions! Huge elements of the "Good Life" are within your reach!

Here are some of my thoughts on the "Good Life" and enriching our daily experience:

1. Clarity and Choice. Some of us are running faster in hopes of slowing down. To me, that makes no sense. Let's face it, some things in life come at a price. You can have just about anything you want in life, but you probably cannot have everything you want. We must choose! Time as a family may "cost" us time at work. Savings will "cost" you some pleasures or purchases. What does your Good Life look like? Think about it. Ponder. Take notes. Make choices.

2. Simple Strategies and Easy Discipline. Saving money requires discipline. Closeness as a couple requires time and communication and a host of other skills. It doesn't "just happen." Building a business means doing many things when they need to be done, not "when we feel like it." Whatever your Good Life looks like, design a strategy or plan, then work your plan. There's no other way.

Here's a simple example. We have a nine week-old puppy in the house. He's cute and cuddly and wonderful. The temptation is to let him play and romp and "just be a puppy." But if we do that he will never be able to travel or to meet our friends. We won't even be able to trust him at the beach. Unless we limit his choices and teach him to get along in this world, his life will be a series of annoyed jerks on his leash and someday, something bad will happen. I don't intend to let that happen. So we discipline him.

Hopefully, I learn from that and also discipline myself, make smart choices and follow reasonable plans to create the life I want.

How about you? What simple steps would make your life dramatically better this week? Most of us are sleep-deprived. If that's a problem in your world, what time do you go to bed? Many of us are not achieving the financial results we would like. If that's true for you, who could teach you to make more? Many of us are not as happy or having as much fun as we would like. If that's a problem in your world, take steps to fix it!

You deserve the Good Life.

Make it happen.

The Lost Wizard

Welcome to the end of this first week of September.

I'm very excited having just finished reading about a gentleman who had a profound impact on the world in the 20th Century.

I had learned some of Nikola Tesla at school, and of his triumphs and struggles to be true to himself. However, for all I had learned of him, I never really got to truly understand the essence of the man himself.

Then I read "The Lost Wizard" and my appreciation for this genius settled into the bedrock of my knowledge foundation. What a legacy this man left!

View this lovely piece here: The Lost Wizard

Spend this weekend discovering the "wizard" that truly lives within you.

You Are Alive And You Are Learning

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Thursday September 4 2008

Welcome to this first Thursday of September.

Has the month started off the way you wanted? With the Fall selling season now underway, you have a great opportunity to pull together your entire years goals and intentions before the Christmas break. Now that’s exciting.

Today we go to one of my favorite contributors for an offering that will speak volumes to many of you. As you’re aware, we here are deeply involved in the personal development industry, and what Thea has to share fits with all we have been saying all year.

You’ll like what she has to say.

You Are Alive And You Are Learning

By Thea Westra

We all know the clichés of, life is a learning process and if you are alive you are learning. There is truth in that, naturally. If we are living then we are learning. Yet the next question you may want to ask yourself is, is that learning achieved consciously or subconsciously? Are you choosing what you are learning, and do you have choice in the matter with what you learn?

Personal development, self-growth, self-improvement, self-help and any of those other popular terms used in the realm of expansion of your experience in life, are really all about that second question. Are you conscious of the choices you make?

When we take on specific classes or training programs, read books or articles, listen to audios, or watch videos related to personal development, we may believe that we are learning. Gaining knowledge is not necessarily learning. Yet in our modern times we have come to equate the two.

When I was teaching, at particular intervals during a school year, I would monitor student progress by way of tests. Personally, I felt it very important to truly gauge whether students could practically apply newly learned concepts. A variety of scenarios would be presented to them in a context of problem solving. I could then observe if they had a handle on newly presented material, formulas or methods.

Life throws us tests and it is not until we are in the middle of a personal experience that calls for us to be more, that we can see how far we have truly evolved. If you think you are enlightened then spent a few days living with your parents. There is nothing like going back to the places of your youth to notice how far you have come.

During the time my father was dying and the time after he died, I observed my own strength and how much I had personally grown. Yet recently, during a personal financial challenge, likewise, I was able to observe my complete lack of growth in that. Based on those observations, I see that personal power in one area of life may not automatically transfer to another.

Have you known people who are highly successful in a corporate arena yet their relationships with friends and family are in tatters? Or seen someone with a happy family life, with lots of friends, yet their condition of bodily health leaves a lot to be desired.

There are many tools you can add to your self-improvement toolbox that can be transferred between various experiences. It is sometimes possible to use a screwdriver where really it is more appropriate to use a hammer. However, to live our most fulfilled lives and to achieve outcomes beyond the usual, then nothing beats having the right tools at the ready.

A few transferable skills you could develop in yourself may be things such as, being organized and being open and prepared for the unexpected, remaining flexible with thought and judgment, developing a state of calm and being able to call up that (or any other) state of being in any given situation. Yet the more distinct skills that you might want to develop, in specific areas, might be more aligned with you attaining more particular knowledge sets. For example, which foods bring which nutritional value, what are the most effective places to store your saved money, what kinds of things can you do to best nurture the relationships with your partner or friends?

If your goal is to have wonderful friendships, then look to develop skill sets that can support you with relationship building and with connecting to yourself and other people. Do you have a target of generating a certain amount of money? Then look for what you will want, for expanding yourself to support with financial growth.

My message here is, are you calling the shots with your personal growth or are you being told how to think, how to respond by unwritten agreements, the norms in society or well-meaning people around you? I hear many people around the traps saying they want to be mavericks yet there is no clear evidence of their taking themselves by the scruff, stepping up to the plate and really meaning it. We create our own urgency, our must do, and our deadlines for personal targets.

Personal growth is a conscious choice, and you make the decision to grow, moment by moment. If you are not conscious in action, or response, then it can only be that you are operating from automatic states of being, reacting rather than responding, to situations that show up. When you are genuinely committed to your own development and growth then it is your responsibility to be deliberate with your actions related to improvement of self. You are the one who needs to choose when and how, to step out of your comfort zone.

Getting what you Want versus Acting on what you Got

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Wednesday September 3 2008

Welcome to this midweek point of the first week of September.

Boy oh boy, I was just wondering if someone just shut off the Summer switch here in the Midwest. We had 37 degrees with the humidity here on Saturday and then boom, “Scottish” weather. The darn furnace came on yesterday. The “big guy” and I need to have a hearty chat.

Anyway, enough griping, I’m here, I’m kicking, and I’m a happy camper really.

One of our newest contributors, and the founder of Personal Development Partners, presents us an offering that is highly worth some of your coffee time today. I believe you’ll like what Aaron has to say.

Getting what you Want versus Acting on what you Got
By Aaron M. Potts

I want, I want, I want! It's the battle cry of the ages, yet people still fail to realize that getting what they want is just a pittance compared to continually taking action once they get it.

You don't need to look any further than the almost universal desire that people have for more money in order to see this concept in action. People jump through all manner of hoops in order to gain financial freedom, but even if they had a mountain of money in front of them, if they didn't do anything with it, then it would just be a useless pile of paper.

It is not what we GET in life that matters, because life is handing us new opportunities every single day. Rather, it is what we DO with those opportunities that will ensure not only our long-term success, but our day-to-day happiness as well.

The Dream Job

Every person has their own rendition of what their "dream job" is, so what would you do if you actually attained it?

• Would you just show up for work every day, but not do any actual work?
• Would you stop working towards future success and advancements?
• Would you ignore opportunities to demonstrate the skills or experience that you used to get the job to begin with?

A "dream job" without a corresponding effort on your part to show that you are worthy of that job is nothing more than an opportunity for you to end up standing in the soup line.

The Dream Body

Yep, we've all pictured it in our heads at one time or another, right? Those firm muscles, tight curves, and sculpted features are things that most people give thought to, and for some people, it is an on-going quest that lasts for decades. What would you do if you got your "dream body," though?

• Would you start eating junk food like it was going out of style?
• Would you stop exercising effectively and on a very consistent basis?
• Would you pick up every unhealthy habit that you could get your hands on?

A "dream body" is made up of both the mental and the physical work that it takes to get that body to begin with. If you stop doing that work, then your "dream body" will once again become nothing but a far off goal that you can't quite get your hands on.

The Dream Relationship

Who hasn't dreamed of their "soul mate" at one time or another, or at least dreamed of the guy or girl that would keep them satisfied on an emotional or physical level? That "dream relationship," however, is not something that can be won, but then just ignored.

• If you are a certain person in the beginning of a happy relationship, do you honestly think that relationship will stay happy if you start acting like a different person?
• If you have certain goals or dreams that are shared by your significant other, but your goals or dreams change, is it your significant other's fault when the relationship starts to crumble?
• If you are a family man or woman, but suddenly you decide to recapture your college glory days of keg parties and panty raids, do you honestly think that is going to fly?

A relationship - by definition - is made up of 2 people harmoniously sharing their life experiences. If one person changes drastically from how they were in the beginning of the relationship, the possibility that the other person will change enough to balance things out is minimal at best.
________________________________________

The moral of the story here is that the attainment of success - no matter how thrilling - is simply a moment in time when you realize that you have won. After that moment has passed, it is time for you to step up to the plate and consistently prove that you are worthy of that success.

It Really Is All About YOU!

A note from peter@thewealthyattitude.com for Tuesday September 2 2008

Welcome to this very first day of business in September.

Today, as this is final third of the year, is all about YOU.

It really is about YOU....

It's about making the most of this moment in time.

You see, life is short -

And we come in, and we go out and what we do in the middle is over to us... in this case you.

What are you doing to make your life GREAT?!

What are you doing to leave a legacy for your family and future love one's.

Yesterday was a day to celebrate Labor Day (in this continent)

However, everyday is a day to celebrate you...

and your opportunity to do something special, something great that makes an impact.

Labor Day marks the end of the 2/3rds of the year and sends us to the start of the 1/3rd.

The year is almost over and whether you've gotten off to a sluggish start, or it's been great, you still have a lot of time to make the end of the year great!

I want to challenge you to take inventory right away

A few questions if I may:

1 - What are 3-5 things you can acknowledge yourself for accomplishing in the last 1-3 months professionally?

2 - What are 3-5 things you can acknowledge yourself for accomplishing in the last 1-3 months personally?

It's often been said, in order to get where you're going, you've got to know where you're starting.

Take inventory...

then take on the challenge and have some fun as you answer these follow up questions too...

3 - What are 3-5 things you are focused on accomplishing in the next 3 months professionally?

4 - What are 3-5 things you are focused on accomplishing in the next 3 months personally?

Are you going to learn a new skill; get a website up; write a new book; create a new blog; build a new online-biz-stream that gives you $xxxxxx per month; write an autoresponder; get an advertising campaign started; in magazines; in newspapers; on the radio; tv; learn a new language; take a class; put some dough away for savings; start a financial fr33dom account; attend a training; etc...

or how about personally -
get into an exercise routine; eat healthier; stop smoking; tell someone you care about you love then; take your kids to the park; take your spouse on exciting date-nite; travel to somewhere fun; take an afternoon to have some fun; etc...

One of my original mentors taught me that most people spend more time planning a birthday or Christmas gift/wish list, than taking the time to plan and design a life!

Take the challenge today and be amazed at how far you'll go if you just take the time to plan it out...

A boat without a rudder and a map, usually ends up on the 'rocks'

You're life can be great...

Make the most of this moment -

Plan it out...

And let us know what we can do to support you to get there...

Feel free to post your feedback on this blog.

Make this day ALL about YOU!

As always, check out what our friends over at Daily Insight are doing to kick off their month. It's bound to be good. Check it out here: Daily Insight

Take care,

~peter~
